LADE: Round table about Media Ethics
Date: Tuesday, 14 August 2007
Place:
Gefinor Rotana Hotel

in the framework of the AFKAR II program funded by the European Union and managed by OMSAR, the Lebanese Association for Democratic Election (LADE)  held a round table about media ethics on Tuesday 14 August 2007 at the Gefinor Rotana Hotel in Hamra, in the presence of journalists working in all media fields.

Discussions revolved around the five essential criteria that were presented by LADE project manager Yara Nassar:
 a) journalists refraining from attacking each other
 b) media establishments refraining from attacking each other
 c) refraining from inventing news
 d) the right of response
 e) separating opinions from news

Moreover, participants discussed the role of the audio-visual media law and the importance of establishing a syndicate for this sector. They also highlighted the importance of broadening the scope of participants in future round tables for more efficiency, in view of the essential role of NGO directors in establishing ethics criteria, particularly in the current political situation.

AFKAR program coordinator Youmna Chacar Ghorayeb pointed out that 3 of the funded projects in the framework of AFKAR revolve around the media, and stressed the importance of networking among the concerned NGOs in view of giving the media a bigger role to play as a fourth power.
